What’s the story with 13 stories?
The origin of the name 13 stories is twofold. Those of us in the marketing and communication fields recognize that what we do, put simply, is to tell a story, hopefully one that resonates with the intended audience. There are numerous ways to craft a story that are compelling, relevant and meaningful.
First, whatever it is that you’re trying to communicate, our goal is to give you options to build the most compelling story for your audience. We won’t give you 13 to sift through necessarily, but we might look at 13 to get you the best options to tell your story.

Second, if you have seen the Ron Howard movie, Apollo 13, you will recall the scene above where a group of Nasa scientists and engineers need to figure out how to build “that”, with only “this” on the table with which to work. Oftentimes, there won’t be the ideal situation or all the requisite pieces to tell the story. The goal remains the same – tell a compelling and meaningful story working with what we have before us.
Richard Bartrem is a seasoned marketing and communications executive with over 35 years of proven leadership and management experience and the founder of 13 stories marketing communications. He has a boundless energy for strategy conversations, big picture thinking, and finding ways to tell compelling stories and grow strong brands.
Prior to his retirement from WestJet in September 2022, Richard was the Vice-President, Communications, Brand and Community Investment for WestJet, responsible for brand and product marketing, social media, public and media relations, internal communications, sponsorship, the WestJet store and community investment. Richard joined WestJet in 2005 as Director, Brand and Communications and over the course of his career at WestJet, helped shape the WestJet brand identity as seen and loved by millions of Canadians and around the world.
His career has provided Richard with a wealth of experiences that can be put to great use by people and organizations looking for help with strategic insights on brand and marketing strategy, communication, culture, media and public relations and corporate culture.
